AHDB Potatoes have released their first estimate of GB potato plantings for 2015 which shows a 6.6% reduction in area compared to 2014.  For the first time in a number of years, this year’s plantings in Northern Europe are down across the board by a total of 3.6%.

This reduction will take away the production surplus that has characterised the last couple of seasons.  Tonnage in GB is forecast to drop by 700,000tn down to 5million tons and the total drop across GB, Belgium, Holland, France and Germany could be as much as 3.5million tons.

All these factors point to a stronger year ahead for potato prices although to what extent it is not yet apparent as there is a long way to go until storage crops are harvested in October.
