Bank of England

The Bank of England’s Deputy Agent for the North West region, Brian Sloan, recently visited Fylde Fresh and Fabulous.

The Bank’s Regional Agencies’ primary role is to assess economic and financial conditions affecting businesses in their area – the  Bank’s “eyes, ears and voice” in the regions, collecting information about trends and developments across the country.

The information helps support decision making, such as interest rate setting by the Monetary Policy Committee, and regional representation helps to explain the Bank’s policy decisions to local businesses, industry and labour groups. Brian’s visit enabled him to encompass agriculture and primary processing as part of his soundings for the region.

Discussion ranged from potato growing/processing, including supply chain trends, through to energy production and the wider economic outlook. Brian was also keen to assess labour costs, commodity costs, employment trends, investment and the outlook for the FFF Business.

Brian’s visit enabled him to see first-hand our potato operation and recent investment in renewable energy. Fylde Fresh and Fabulous is responding to and managing volatility in the potato market by adding real value to its operation and improving efficiency, underpinned  by the use of peelings for renewable energy.

Brian appeared impressed by the operation and innovative use of technology to improve efficiencies by producing energy from by-products of the potato operation.
